Life in Kafunjo: Bathrooms

Not every family in the village has a bathroom and they are at the mercy of digging small holes for themselves as needed. Once the hole fills up, another small hole is dug. While some may not think Kafunjo’s bathroom facilities (below) look very fancy, they are a huge step up from what all the children are used to. The toilets are built over very, very large holes. Once filled, the Project would then need to build new bathrooms somewhere else. However, Bruno said they have had these toilets since the very beginning of the Project and they have still not filled up yet. They utilize a technique learned from locals in order to prolong their use. This method involves breaking many glass bottles and dropping the broken glass into each toilet. Somehow, this breaks up the dried feces and allows everything in them to settle.

Please see below for a photo of one of the children’s shower rooms, a toilet, and a video tour of this bathroom facility.
