Life in Kafunjo: Washing Dishes

Usually, staff members take on the responsibility of washing dishes. However, when children are on school breaks, they assist with this job and they are happy to do their part. Dishes are washed three times a day. They do this by filling a large bucket with water and scrubbing the dishes clean using rags and a bar of soap. Because the children are young, they don’t always do a thorough job, so the staff usually wash the big pots themselves.

“Washing dishes prevents diseases and controls germs. We get water and washing soap, wash dishes, sun dry them, wipe them, and keep them in a clean and safe place.”

- Rachel, a child at The Kafunjo Community Project’s orphanage
